Starting Strong
By RapDrums.com

The music industry as we know it today is an amazingly dissimilar one from that of even five years ago. If you have a serious ambition to become a producer in today’s game, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the quality of production, changing technologies, and the sheer number of active producers. It’s often difficult to get your feet off the ground and establish yourself as a respected, well-known producer. Give yourself a boost by following these beneficial pieces of advice.

Firstly, don’t be afraid to start big. If you are serious about going somewhere in the industry, go ahead and splurge on a few nice pieces of central equipment to get you started. Committing money towards your goal will give you further motivation to succeed. However, you need to do whatever research you can on the product before you buy; make every dollar count. And also keep in mind that you will probably not be using the same piece of equipment forever, so keep the technology trends in mind when purchasing.

Secondly, learn your equipment up and down. Whether you’ve got a computer program, a full studio, or simply a recording keyboard, this rule will always apply. Read manuals, experiment, talk to other users and keep distinguishing yourself as a user of whatever equipment you’re using. It’s easier to improve your technique when you have mastered all the tools in your toolbox.

Regarding your musical skills, if you have no prior musical experience, go shopping immediately for every piece of literature on music production you can find. Also, enroll yourself in some kind of music theory/composition class. You must, in some way, educate yourself in the laws of music, especially if you’re seriously considering producing as a potential career choice. There are many exceptions that have made it through without this type of training, but be sure that the greats have gone to such lengths.

That being said, whether or not you’re trying to make music your career, if you’re not serious about being successful in the game then stop reading this right now and forget everything you’ve just read. There is no quick, effortless road to success in any field; and hip hop is no exception. You have to be 100% committed to achieving your goals in order to end up anywhere close.

Now, what exactly does that entail? One hundred percent commitment in this case means that you have to be willing to spend your precious time, energy, and money if you ever hope to go anywhere. A dedication of anywhere from 4-8 hours a day is a good starting place. Experimentation, self-education, and efficiency are keys to polishing your raw talents into well refined skills.

Staying true to these guidelines will put you on an assured path towards establishing yourself in the music industry of tomorrow. This combination of talent, entrepreneurship, determination, well-conducted research, and commitment is truly an indomitable force; one which has the power to propel practically any beginning producer straight to the top.
