Exclusive Interview with Byron Nemeth
By RapDrums.com
Biography: As a native Ecuadorian, Nemeth has had a major impact in the United States. Starting out as a professional guitarist, he has made the transition into the world of production and worked with such notable names as Nick Webb (credits to Queen, Pink Floyd, and more) at Abbey Road Studios in London, England. He has since released his most noteworthy and artistically serious album, “100 Worlds.” In 2002, Nemeth had a featured chapter, "Switching Gears," in the book Working Musicians by New York City ASCAP/DEEMS Taylor award winning author Bruce Pollock.
Q: How important is audio quality (as opposed to musicality) in modern music?
A: I personally place a very HIGH importance on all levels of all music in all recordings. The problem is clients that always want to cut corners and sometimes not put the time and budget into a correct production.
Q: Do you consider music production an art or a science?
A: Both - real engineers understand that it is definitely both – the problem is the clients that don't understand this - very few really respect it as both.
Q: Sound quality vs. musical quality:
A: Both are equal and totally different in approach.
Q: Where do you think modern music is headed?
A: Straight into people’s iPods.
Q: The marketability of producers has become more of a factor for record
labels in recent years. Is this fair?
A: Fairness has nothing to do with the business - the reality is that the labels rely on the producer for a specific sound that can be translated in many new artists, especially new artists that can be shaped, this will change as independent artists become more famous through the net.
Q: Which niche is more competitive: the producer's or the artist's?
A: The artist’s for sure - millions and millions of artists and bands, there are only thousands of engineers.
Q: One piece of advice to all the young producers:
A: Realize that this business is changing faster than you can imagine and you need to learn new technologies as quickly as you can.
